 Padma Shri and Saxophonist Awardee Qadri Gopalanath Passed Away

Renowned saxophonist and Padma Shri awardee Kadri Gopalanath died in Mangaluru, Karnataka. The funeral of 69-year-old Qadri Gopalanath will take place after the return of his son.

Renowned saxophonist and Padma Shri awardee Kadri Gopalanath died in Mangaluru, Karnataka. The funeral of 69-year-old Qadri Gopalanath will take place after the return of his son.

Kadri Gopalanath’s son lives in Kuwait, who will come to India by Friday evening. Kadri Gopalanath has been honored with several awards including Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and Karnataka Kalashri. He was honored with the Padma Shri award in 2004 by then President APJ Abdul Kalam.

According to his family, he was ill for the last three months. After which he was admitted to the hospital on Thursday night.

Please tell that Kadri is credited with popularizing Carnatic music playing on saxophone. Gopalnath had to work hard for nearly 20 years to become a master of the saxophone. Legend of Carnatic music Sammanagudi Srinivas has called Iyer Gopalanath even to the genius of Carnatic music.

Kadri learned about great poems and texts through Yakshagana. As a child, he used to see Yakshagana sitting on the first seat with a ticket of 25 paise. It was here that he got to know about Ramayana and Mahabharata. Qadri used to sit and practice in Pandav Guhe near Jogi Math after his class.
